Coaching for Healthy Change

Increasingly, as community practitioners and change agents, we are being challenged to “be the change we want to see in the world.” It’s not just what we do that makes a difference, we know. It’s also what we be. And what we’re becoming. In other words, to change the world, we need to pay attention to change in ourselves.

As leadership luminary William O’Brien has aptly pointed out, the success of an intervention depends on the interior condition of the intervenor. So, to be an effective community builder or health promoter, I need to pay attention to my own health, well-being and healthy development. As practitioners, our work will be most effective when we put ourselves – and our own development – at the center of the change equation. So true.

If you are a community practitioner or change agent who is interested in exploring your own change process, we are proud to introduce you to our colleagues at Integral Coaching Initiatives.

Integral Coaching Initiatives: Supporting Mindful Change-Making

Barbara Alexander writes: Integral Coaching is a process that facilitates growth and change by enlarging the structural lens through which a person sees, acts and evaluates how they are operating in the world. At its core, Integral Coaching is about change.

At one time or another all of us have tried to accomplish something and fallen short. We've tried to find a way to be more productive at work, or develop a particular expertise, or maybe we have had a sense that life needs more balance. But despite our best efforts we don’t seem to be able to jump the hurdle and effect lasting change.

Not surprisingly, in our efforts to make change, we tend to use the same outlook and approach which has brought us to this point but is unable to carry us further. We have fallen into that frustrating pattern of “trying the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.” This is the moment that an Integral Coach is trained to address.

There is a reason we have trouble effecting change: our structural lens, or way of being in the world, is largely invisible to us. And while it has wonderful qualities and has allowed us to accomplish a great deal, it is limiting. An Integral Coach helps us to recognize – right down to our bones – this way of being, this structural lens, and then helps us to grow into a new way of being so that we can accomplish a particular goal or change in our lives. It’s not magic, it’s work, but it is work that enables us to grow, to expand our capacity to face whatever challenge is before us.

This move into a new way of being in the world is accomplished through a step by step coaching process that first brings focus to the strengths and limitations of your current way of being, then teaches new competencies and a new way of being that will help you reach your chosen goal. Integral Coaching works to bring about change in any area of life.
